In response to the Armed conflict in 2024 and the displacement of around one million individuals, DAWRUNA launched the Community Kitchen Initiative to support internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mount Lebanon. This initiative aimed to address urgent food security needs by providing regular meals at a public-school housing vulnerable family. The Community Kitchen encouraged participation from local residents in meal planning and preparation, fostering ownership and community engagement.
Empowering the Local Community: The Community Kitchen Initiative supported approximately 150 families by sourcing ingredients from local farmers and vendors, fostering economic empowerment within the community. By prioritizing local goods, we not only bolstered the local economy but also helped alleviate tensions between internally displaced persons (IDPs) and residents, promoting unity and collaboration. Our close cooperation with local authorities further strengthened community ties and ensured a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of all involved.
Inclusive Engagement for IDPs: We actively engaged all residents of the school housing IDPs in the meal preparation and planning process. By involving them in the initiative, we fostered a sense of belonging and ownership, allowing participants to contribute their ideas and preferences, which helped create a supportive environment where everyone felt valued and included.
Creating Space for Women to Connect: The initiative provided a vital platform for women to come together, share experiences, and enjoy some respite amid the challenges of war. Through cooking and communal meals, we facilitated opportunities for social interaction, creativity, and support, helping to alleviate stress and build lasting connections within the community during difficult times.
