The losses in the South extend beyond material destruction to affect the people themselves. Young lives have been lost, along with efforts and energies that could have been invested in building the nation rather than burying it. Today, the South is a place of expanding graveyards and bleeding towns—a region devastated in the fullest humanitarian sense. There is no way out of this catastrophe other than by embracing this segment of the population back into the fold of the state.
